Little Women

“You don’t need scores of suitors. You need only one… if he’s the right one.” Louisa May Alcott

Little Women, written by Louisa May Alcott, is a book considered to have a coming to age genre, since you can see the transformation or growth of the characters throughout the story. The reasons why I selected this book are the proximity of the release of the new film, and that it is one of the most beautiful classic books ever written.

The story is settled in Massachusetts, and it is known that it happens during the Civil War since the girls' father is away from home and battling. Related to this, we have 4 main characters, which are the March girls: Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy.

Margaret, who is the eldest of the four, is sixteen years old and is described as someone very pretty with large eyes, plenty of soft brown hair and white hands. Then, we have Josephine, best known as Jo, who is 15 years old and beautiful; the peculiar thing about her is that she would have liked to be a boy, because she wishes she could go to school like them. The third daughter is Elizabeth (Beth) and she is a bright-eyed girl of thirteen, with a shy manner, a timid voice and a peaceful expression. Finally, we have Amy, who is described as a regular maiden girl with blue eyes. She is a little cocky and spoiled for being the youngest; she gets angry fast and wants to be considered a lady.

As far as I have read, the story has developed around the family, showing the great bond they have, and the sadness they are going through by having a father in the war. Furthermore, the older girls have already met Laurence at a dance where he had fun with Jo while Meg danced and sprained her ankle.
