Reading Project III: Lord of the Flies

Lord of the Flies

“Now out of the terror rose another desire, thick, urgent, blind.”

-William Golding

During the last meeting the group had, the possible existence of a beast living on the island was discussed, leaving the children more alert. One night, they witness an aerial battle occurring far away; but they do not notice the aviator that falls with his parachute on top of the mountain nearby.

At some point, Ralph, Jack, and Simon decide to go investigate the so-called monster. When the trio reaches the mountaintop, they see a bulge surrounded by darkness, which is actually the body of the falling fighter pilot. The gang, beyond terrified, assume it is the beast, and report it to the others.

During the assembly, Jack finally decides to separate from the group and create his own tribe, disregarding Ralph’s authority completely. At last, Ralph and Piggy are left alone with the smaller children, while they wonder where Simon is.

On the other hand, during another hunting task, the newly proclaimed hunters catch another pig, whose head ends up being impaled on a stick as an “offering” for the beast.

Amidst this situation, it is learned that Simon goes where the pig head resides. Then, looking at the pinned head, the boy has an imaginary conversation with the Lord of the Flies, who warns him. Later on, Simon finds the aviator’s corpse.

At the same time, on the other side of the island, the hunters are having a feast with their heads full of killing intent. The moment Simon comes to tell them that the beast is, in reality, a person; the tribe mistakes him and kills him. Having participated in the murder, Ralph and Piggy try to convince themselves that it never happened.
