Bridge of Birds
“Suddenly, I understood that the world was white because I was inside a giant pearl, and with awareness came awakening, and I sat up and blinked in the morning sunlight” . -Barry Hughart
“Bridge of Birds” is a book written by Barry Hughart, the first novel in The Chronicles of Master Li and Number Ten Ox series. This story tells the insane adventures of Li Kao and Lu-Yu, in their journey to find “The Great Root of Power”, which is the cure to a disease affecting Lu-Yu’s village. Throughout the book, we can see how the two fight to overcome all the hardships befalling them, and try not to give up. Since it is a fantasy novel, it is full of magical and wicked characters who play an important role guiding the pair either to the right path or to their grave.
On the other hand, I reckon that this story is very interesting in terms of how the events are developed. Certainly, what makes this book worth reading are the valuable lessons left by the characters, and also, the way in which some scenes are described. Besides, I consider that the author did a wonderful job at painting so vividly the scenery.
Now, If I were to mention the things that I disliked, I would say that there are some parts that are overloaded with too much information, which makes the reading a bit complicated. Nevertheless, there
are other scenes were I felt that there was a lack of emotions, and overall, it made the story feel kind of unbalanced.
In conclusion, I do think that this book is a great read, since it can transport the reader’s mind to magical places, and although this novel might not have been my favorite, I still firmly believe it is worthy to give it an opportunity.
Finally, I would recommend “Bridge of Birds” to young adults and adults who enjoy fantasy books, and like the surprises a tale can bring. Additionally, it would be interesting to read the rest of the series, in fact, I might do it in the future.
