Margaret's quiet life was over since they had to move to Milton. After that, the first problem they faced was that they had to find a house. Luckily, Margaret’s father had a friend and he helped them a lot to settle in the city. This really was a stroke of luck, because her father’s friend not only helped them to find a house to stay but he also helped mr. Hale to find a job as a teacher.
Despite everything seemed to go well, the family was going through a very difficult time trying to adapt to their new life. The vibe of the environment was completely different from Helstone. In Milton, people were much more rude and abrupt, and the only thing that people had in mind, was making money. It was the more stressful thing for them, to look around and seeing people working long hours to have something to eat. These people never had time for a wilk in the park, to smile and say “good morning” to others or to just enjoy life.
Margaret also got a job in a factory and had a very strict boss,mr John Thorton, whom she didn't get along with at all. The relationship between her and her boss worsened because Margaret made a friend there in the Thorton factory, named Bessy. Margaret claimed that Mr. Thorton was guilty because of the deplorable conditions in which he had his employees. Nevertheless, he was one of the people who cared the most about his employees and he was always doing everything that was on his hands even if the economy was absolutely broke. Margaret could not see it, she was blind of fury and she even did not noticed that he was falling in love with her.
Then, it happened what everyone was expecting; a strike started. All these people were furious, they wanted to destroy all the factories and every place on their way. When they finally got to the Thorton factory they wanted to enter and Margaret trying to calm them down received a blow to the head with a stone. Mr Thorton can not do much for her, just to keep her safe at home.
